As a key initiative of the UP-ON Performance Art Archive, the UP-ON International Live Art Festival has, since its inception in 2008, adhered to four core principles: non-profit, international, academic, and public. It actively promotes professional creative practices and academic research, and is dedicated to building an international platform for live art exchange.
To date, the festival has been held thirteen times, with a total of 286 artists from around the world participating. It has become a festival widely recognized and highly regarded within the international performance art community. During the UP-ON International Live Art Festival, in addition to artists’ live performances, numerous themed lectures and workshops are held to provide public educational resources to the community. This is a vital component of building a healthy artistic ecosystem.
In June 2026, the UP-ON Performance Art Archive began operating under a dual-city model in Chengdu and Shanghai. Several new projects focused on archival research and exhibition have been launched successively, and the Archive’s systematic drive in creative practice, theoretical research, and the collection, organization, and exhibition of materials will continue to be strengthened. At the same time, based on an overall assessment of the archive’s healthy operation, the UP-ON International Performance Art Festival will temporarily adopt an alternating scale model, held in alternate years, with 2026 designated as a “small year.” This aligns with the original intent behind the archive’s establishment and opens up greater possibilities for its future development.

THE FOUR POINTS OF THE UP-ON INTERNATIONAL LIVE ART FESTIVAL
● Non-Profit UNCOMMERCIAL: The festival operates on a non-profit basis. Except for receiving the same subsidies as artists during the event, the staff works without pay at all other times. Financial records are made public two weeks after the festival concludes.
● Internationalization: From its inception, the festival has positioned itself as a professional platform for international exchange. We extend broad invitations to artists from around the world, ranging from pioneers who have been engaged in live art since the 1970s to adventurous emerging artists.
● ACADEMIC NATURE: The festival strives to invite outstanding artists with extensive creative experience from both China and abroad, facilitating close, professional academic exchanges and sharing, and engaging in dialogue and discussion on the most cutting-edge topics in performance art on an international scale.
● PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT During the festival, in addition to creating works, artists will host a variety of activities—including lectures and workshops—at art institutions, community centers, and universities to promote and enhance public awareness of performance art.
As a professional, non-profit event, the UP-ON International Live Art Festival has reached its 14th edition thanks to the sustained support of many like-minded individuals over the years. This includes the dedicated creative work of artists from home and abroad, the tireless efforts of volunteers and the organizing team, the advice and encouragement from industry professionals, and the support from numerous partner organizations in terms of funding, venues, and personnel—not to mention the active participation of the public. Having grown through the support and blessings of many, the UP-ON International Live Arts Festival recognizes that it must maintain a mindset of walking on thin ice, scrutinize itself with an international perspective, and tirelessly improve its professional standards to live up to everyone’s support. The road ahead is long; let us forge ahead together with our peers.
