On June 1, 2026, the 14th UP-ON International Live Art Festival launched its open call for artists and researchers. One of the eligibility requirements was that applicants must not have previously participated in the UP-ON Festival, with the aim of expanding opportunities for emerging artists. After deliberation by the festival’s organizing committee, 13 artists from China and abroad were ultimately selected to participate, while the researcher position remained vacant.
At the beginning of 2026, the UP-ON Live Art Archives initiated a dual-city operation model in Chengdu and Shanghai, resulting in an overall increase in workload. To ensure the smooth operation of its many projects, the festival adjusted its scale to alternate between major and minor editions: the number of participating artists will fluctuate accordingly, and this year marks a minor edition. Despite the adjusted scale, the festival’s rich array of exchange formats—such as lectures, workshops, and live art creation—remains intact.
Since its founding in 2008, the UP-ON International Live Art Festival has regarded art-loving young people as its core audience. In previous editions, the festival consistently visited multiple universities to carry out a wide range of exchange activities. However, this tradition has been gradually scaled back year by year and was reduced to zero last year. There is always a gap between ideals and reality, yet we continue to move forward with hope, never ceasing our steps.
The UP-ON Festival has been held for 13 editions, with a cumulative total of 284 participating artists from China and abroad. It has become an art festival with an excellent reputation and broad influence in the international field of live art—a result of the collective efforts of many like-minded colleagues! And there is still a long road ahead. See you in October!

THE FOUR POINTS OF THE UP-ON INTERNATIONAL LIVE ART FESTIVAL
● UNCOMMERCIAL
The festival is a non-profit endeavor; aside from receiving the same subsidies as artists during the festival, the staff works without pay at all other times. The festival’s financial records are made public half a month after the festival concludes.
● INTERNATIONALIZATION
From its inception, the festival has positioned itself as an international platform for professional exchange. We extend broad invitations to artists from around the world, including both pioneers who have been engaged in performance art since the 1970s and adventurous emerging artists.
● ACADEMICNATURE
The festival strives to invite outstanding artists with extensive creative experience from both China and abroad, facilitating close, professional academic exchanges and sharing, and fostering dialogue and discussion on the cutting-edge topics of performance art on an international scale.
● PUBLICITY
During the festival, in addition to creating works, artists will host a variety of activities—such as lectures and workshops—at art institutions, in communities, and at universities to promote and enhance public awareness of performance art. As a professional, nonprofit event, the UP-ON International Performance Art Festival has reached its 13th edition thanks to the sustained support of many like-minded individuals over the years. This includes the dedicated creative work of domestic and international artists; the tireless efforts of volunteers and the organizing team; the advice and encouragement from industry professionals; the support from numerous partner organizations in terms of funding, venues, and personnel; and, last but not least, the active participation of the public. Having grown through the support and blessings of many, the UP-ON International Live Arts Festival recognizes that it must maintain a mindset of walking on thin ice, examine itself through an international lens, and tirelessly improve its professional standards to live up to everyone’s support. The road ahead is long; let us forge ahead together with our fellow artists.
