Night School NO. 55 | Exploring with performance Art : Atypical Bodies under the rules of city

The “rules of the city” is a complex system of intertwined power, capital, technology, and social culture, which contains the system of spatial governance and the logic of discipline, and is the underlying structure of the city’s functioning, while the “atypical body” is a rebellious practice against the discipline of the rules of the city.

Yang Junfeng’s works attempt to explore the “gap” between the body and social space by slicing up the “city”. The body, like the “thorn” of the city, pierces through the illusion of standardization, allowing the texture of the power structure and the temperature of individual memories to reappear in the midst of pain and friction, forming a black humor deconstruction of the “rules”. This sharing will present Yang Junfeng’s works related to “city” slicing in recent years, and discuss the possibility of “atypical body” under “city rules”.

Junfeng Yang

Born in Lanzhou, Gansu in 1994, Yang lives and works in Chengdu and Mianyang now.

Yang Junfeng uses performance art as his main method of multi-media exploration, reconstructing the physical body as the key to decoding urban power. Through bodily intervention and the deconstruction of consumer symbols, he tears apart capital’s standard coding procedures for the body, and recasts the possibility of sensual existence in the cracks of the mechanization of discipline.
