This sharing session will be presented by four members of the “Sino-Japanese Contemporary Performing Arts KOURYU / JIAOLIU Project”. Through a lecture and workshop, they will share their practices and explorations from the past three years in China, Japan, Indonesia, and elsewhere.The word exchange (交流) in both Japanese and Chinese evokes the image of intersecting currents of water: streams converge across difference, pause, diverge, and generate new flows.Taking “water” as its theme, the members transform the water of nature and consciousness perceived in each place they visit into an inner, embodied water of imagery through poetry, painting, sound, and movement. Through long periods of living and creating together, they seek to create “our bodies.”

Sino-Japanese Contemporary Performing Arts KOURYU / JIAOLIU Project was established in 2023 as a fluid collective of six artists and creators from Japan and China. Initially, the project sought to foster meaningful exchange grounded in lived experience between the two countries. As the collaboration evolved over the past three years, its focus gradually shifted toward exchange itself, exploring how performance might expand and reimagine what exchange can be. Beginning with the body as a site of perception and thought, the collective works internally through residencies, traveling together, and living together, and externally through wrkshops, lectures, and performances. Moving between these different modes of practice, it continually experiments with new forms of collaboration. Rather than seeking universality in the Western sense, it attends to the affinities that emerge through difference.
Yuta Hagiwara
theater director and the founder of Kamome Machine company based in Tokyo. He won the 13th Aichi Arts Foundation Drama Award and the Toga Engeki Jin Konkūru Award in 2016. In 2018 he participated in TheatertreffenInternational Forum in Berlin. He was selected for the Asian Cultural Council New York Fellowship.
Mengfan Wang
theatre and dance maker. She is selected as “Dance Hopeful (Hoffnungsträger)” by German dance magazine tanz in its yearbook 2018. Her dance works have been invited to VIE Festival Bologna, Beijing Fringe Festival, Wuzhen Theater Festival, among others.
Suguru Yamamoto
playwright, theater director and actor. He has been involved in many performances, international co-productions, and plays in other Asian countries and North America. “Girl X” garnered him the Bangkok TheatreFestival 2014 Award for Best Original Script and Best Play. He won the 66th Kishida Kunio Drama Award for“BANANA FLOWER CAN BE EATEN.” He is a Fellow of The Saison Foundation.
Na An
Na An is a dance artist and researcher whose practice examines what lies beneath vulnerability and complexity.She has shown her work at various theaters and spaces in Los Angeles,New York, Melbourne, and Beijing. Na was a 2022 Artist in Residence Recipient at Jonah Bokaer Arts Foundation,New York.She is pursuing a Ph.D. inCritical Dance Studies at the University of California, Riverside
