The UP-ON International Live Art Festival is the only international performance art festival based in Chengdu. Building on the success of its first three editions, the 2016 edition will take place from April 22 to May 4 in Chengdu. This year’s festival will feature 45 participating artists—24 from abroad and 21 from China.
Among the invited guests are renowned Swiss performance art pioneers Monika Günther and Ruedi Schill, who have been active in the field since the 1970s. In addition to their artistic practices, both are also professors of performance art at art universities. Other participating artists, such as Beate Linne (Belgium), Roi Vaara (Finland), and Rokko Juhász (Slovakia), are leading figures in performance art within their respective countries and regions.
In addition to the presentation of live works, several participating artists will also deliver lectures and participate in exchange activities at art academies and institutions. The festival provides a platform for deeper engagement with the art-historical context of this highly experimental creative medium. It allows audiences to experience the unique, irreplaceable, present-tense power of live performance art—an art form marked by immediacy and intent.
At the same time, the festival encourages emerging artists to affirm their creative direction and actively contributes to the development of performance art in Chengdu and across China. It fosters dialogue between local and international art communities, further promoting contemporary art exchange on a global scale.
Festival Theme:
The theme of this edition is “Diffusion.” Emphasizing interaction and exchange through the medium of live performance art, the festival invites audiences to share in the beauty of co-creation. It aims to move those who experience it—through both emotion and reason—and inspire poetic reflection on time and life. The result is a one-time-only, unrepeatable experience of the live moment.
