In 2007, artists Zhou Bin and Liu Chengying founded the UP-ON Live Art Space in Chengdu and, in the same year, began preparations for the UP-ON International Live Art Festival.
The 2012 edition of the festival was held in Chengdu from October 10 to 16, featuring 25 invited artists from China and abroad.
Project Introduction:
In 2008, we held the first edition of the UP-ON Live Art Festival in Chengdu. After a four-year hiatus, the festival returned to Chengdu from October 10 to 16, 2012. This edition brought together 25 artists (16 from China and 9 from other countries) to exchange the latest developments in performance art.
During the festival, in addition to presenting live art performances, several participating artists also delivered lectures and hosted exchanges at local universities—including the College of Fine Arts of Sichuan Conservatory of Music and the College of Arts of Sichuan University.
We believe that hosting this festival will help more young artists affirm their creative direction, allow art students to engage more deeply with this experimental medium, and enable a broader public to experience the unique and irreplaceable power of live art—an art form rooted in the present moment and defined by its distinctive attitude. Ultimately, the festival aims to actively contribute to the growth and recognition of performance art in China.
Festival Theme:
This edition was held under the theme “The Poetic Power.” Through the convergence of concept and gesture in performance art, the festival invited audiences to experience the poetic force within avant-garde practices—to move those who engage emotionally and intellectually with what they see and hear, and to inspire a poetic understanding of time and life. It offered an unrepeatable, live encounter for all who took part.
